Saturday March 11th Deuteronomy 6: 4 — 7
Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them.
The Great Commandment, repeated by Jesus in Matthew 22:37, is central to the Jewish law and faith. It is based on the direct relationship between God and people, for the Israelites are reminded yet again that "the Lord is our God" (v.4) God has chosen them and this God is theirs. They belong together and are inseparable as a result, whatever happens. This was particularly pertinent as they were about to enter a land where a variety of other gods were being worshipped by the indigenous population. This new relationship with God demands total commitment. It requires all their thoughts, feelings and actions; their heart, soul and might. It's not possible to have a half-hearted relationship with God and properly demonstrate your love.
God, strengthen us in mind, body and spirit to live our lives according to your will, so that others may see in us the wonder of your love. Amen
